What is this galvanized steel coil stuff anyway?
Well, it’s like regular steel, but they put a coat on it. Like, when you put on a raincoat, right? Keeps ya dry. This coat keeps the steel from gettin’ all rusty. They call it galvanizin’, sounds like somethin’ a doctor would do, but it’s just makin’ the steel stronger, I guess. This coat is made of somethin’ called zinc. Don’t ask me what that is, sounds like somethin’ you put in a battery to me.
- Kept hearin’ that one type is hot-dipped, means they dunk the steel in hot zinc. Like fryin’ chicken, but with steel and zinc.
- And then there’s this other type, electro-galvanized. Sounds all high-tech, but it just means they use electricity to put the zinc on. Probably faster, them city folks always in a hurry.
Where do they use this stuff?
Everywhere, it seems! They use it to build houses, ya know, the roofs and walls and stuff. And those big buildin’s in the city, they use it too. I saw them usin’ it on the new barn down the road, too. Tough stuff, I tell ya. I even heard they use it to make cars, though I ain’t never seen it myself. They also use it to make pipes and wires. You know, the stuff that carries water and ‘lectricity. It’s like the backbone of things.
Market talk, big numbers and such
Now, I don’t understand all this fancy market talk, but I heard some fellas talkin’ at the store. Said this galvanized steel coil thing is a big deal. Lots of money in it. They were throwin’ around numbers like billions and billions. Said the market is growin’ real fast. People need more and more of this stuff to build things.
They said last year, in twenty-twenty-three, this market was worth somethin’ like twenty-nine and a half billion dollars. That’s a lot of money, more than I can even imagine. And they said it’s gonna get even bigger, like double that in a few years. Maybe by twenty-thirty, they said. Heck, I might not even be around by then! And someone said something about the number being close to 250 billion by 2031, geez that’s a lot of chicken feed.
One fella even mentioned something about standards, like how they gotta make this steel coil a certain way. Said somethin’ about Europe and America havin’ their own rules. Sounds complicated. All this talk about EN and ASTM, my head started spinning. Just make the stuff strong, that’s all I care about.
Some other things I picked up
Heard them talkin’ ‘bout different shapes too. Like sheets and coils, tubes and pipes, and wires. Seems like they can make this steel into just about anything. And they got different types of coatings too, somethin’ about hot-dip and electro-galvanized again. Guess that makes a difference depending on what you’re usin’ it for.
Oh, and another thing, they said if you wanna weld this stuff, you gotta burn off that zinc coat first. Said it makes nasty fumes, gotta be careful. But once that’s gone, you can weld it up good and strong.
So, what’s the big deal?
Well, like I said, I ain’t no expert. But from what I hear, this galvanized steel coil is important stuff. It’s strong, it lasts a long time, and people need it to build all sorts of things. It’s good stuff for keeping things strong and keeping things from rusting. And it sounds like it’s gonna be around for a long time, makin’ folks money and buildin’ up the world.
